AMATEUR ATHLETICS

THE NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP .MEETING. Besides the championship shield, which is on view in Jlr. E. C. Browne's shop in Willis Street, the Queensland Jubileo Commemoration Shield will bo competed for at the Basin ficservo on Saturday next. This trophy was presented to tho Neiv Zealand team that carried oil' Ihc shield at the Australasian Championship Meeting held in Brisbane in 19(11). The Commissioner of the Queensland Jubilee Exhibition, which was then open, was so pleased with the performances of the New Zealand athletes- that he asked them to tako back with them to tho Dominion a trophy for competition. The Kew Zealand Amateur Athletic Association deckled to allot the trophy to tlie centre whoso representatives won , the most standards at a championship meeting. It may bo necessary to say that a standard time in which a certain race can be run is cut' by the authorities, and if a competitor improves upon this set time he is entitled 'to a certificate detailing the performance, which is called a standard certificate. These standards are generally pretty stiff— 10 l-ssec. for the 100 yds., 2min. for the half-mile, 1G l-ssec. for tho 12flyds. hurdles, and so oil—so that a competitor who wins one of these certificates is a good man in his class.
