SURF ASSOCIATION
CAKNIYAL AT LYALL BAY. To secure uniformity of organieatior and of life-saving methods, to. assist ir tho preservation of the beaches as na tional playgrounds, and generally to safe guard the interests of the surf-bathing public, the various surf clubs in th< Wellington district, some tims ago forrnei an association known as the Wellingtor Surf Association. This body lias framer a comprehensive constitution and set o: Tides, which will go far to spcure tho rough efficiency in the life-saving methods and work of its affiliated clubs. Notabli among its rules is one which provide; that no person may be an active membei of any clu'b until he has passed a "surJ test."' This comprises a severe examination and endurance in the water. The association hns also instituted r shield for inter-club competition, foi which already orer .£2O has been s"l> scribed by one club (Maranui) and gen-erouslv-disposed citizens. It is proposed to endeavour to rni=e double this ainounl and make the shield a really fine one. It is proposed to hold a surf carnival ni Lyall Bay in tho near future, when the first, competition for the surf shield will take place. Another pernetunl trophy presented by Captain Wahlers, and known as tho Wahlers' Trophy, will be competed for at Worser Bay on January A special general niertin? of delegates of the association will be held on Thursday evening next to make arrangements for the carnival, and to elect officers for the current yoar.
