BOWLS

WELLINGTON CENTRE'S TOURNAMENT CONCLUSION OF RINK PLAY The rink play in connection with the Wellington Centre's tournament came Jo an end on .Saturday afternoon. The weather was dull and threatening throughout the day, bur, though ihore were several dark interludes, the rain held off, and plav was not interrupted throughout the day. In the penultimate round, when the quidnuncs imagined that they could pick the winners of the last two games in the different sections thsre wove several unexpected upsets. For example, Portecus (Wellington) with no losses (In 0 section) went down to Reid (Lvall 8.-tv'i. and in tho same lound Tyrrell'(Lyall'fray), hitherto without a loss, was defeated by Shepherd, who has l!vs major lo'Sf.s up till this win. Still oilier nnlooked for defeats were those of Fountain (Wellington) by Dimock (Thorndon) and Stephens (Kelburn), with an unbeaten record, by Mackay, of Hataitai. In each ease it was probably the change in weather conditions, as much as luck, which brought about the defeat of such sterling rinks, but ono never can te'.l at bowk.

The practice of some rinks dropping out after tho second day's nlay is to be deplored. In two coses on Saturday rinks dropped out, leaving thoso rinks they were to meet stranded high and dry. It is significant that in one case the rink which withdrew had no wins, and in the other, four losses out of six games, indicat'ng tho reason of tho withdrawals. The matter of such withdrawals (except on account of sickness, or other vital necessity) is ono that will havo to be considered by the centre, in view of the disappointment caused to rinks who looked forward to the game oven more than to a win by default SATURDAY'S PLAY.
