THE CARNIVAL
CONCLUDING JHY'S DOINGS. Saturday saw the conclusion of the three da/s' Victory Gala aml Venahan Confetti Carnival -held nt LyaU Baj under the auspices of the Lyall Bay Municipal Electors' Association and the local life-saving and surf clubs. The day was marred by unfavourable weather conditions for although the ram held off the skv was overcast and a high wind prevailed. Nevertheless, there was ?. fair attendance of the public, and t compreliensivo programme was carried out. ino submarine explosion was again attended with every success, and there was dancing on the parade to the strains ol two New Zealand Natives' Association Band. The treasure- hunt also took place. A feature of the afternoon was the baby carnival, which was a pronounced success. Many mothers brought thenbabies to the Forget-me-Not Hall. Lyall Bav wihere the judging was carried out. Much interest was also evinced in the children's fancv dress competition and in the dancing contest for girls and boys under W the judgo of which was Mr. J. D. M'Phee. The strain entailed by the organisa-v Hon and supervision of the carnival proved too much for ttic energetic see- j rotary (Mr. T. Leslie Jones), who on Friday night suffered a nervous breakdown. Consequently Messrs. T. M. Donovan and D. J. Ryan were deputed by the executive to carry on on Saturday, in the absence of Mr. .Tones. The coupon system adopted by the executive and used throughout the carnival broke down on Saturday, the multiplicity of sideshows and "the manner of their working precluding the successful operation of the system.
