FURTHER RESULTS TENTH AND ELEVENTH ROUNDS 1 The tenth round of the chess championship leurney was continued at 9.30 | a in. on Saturday. A large number of visitors were present, and play was of a more solid nature than usual. Kelling won from Ewen in attractive style, working up a pretty combination from which Ewen was unable to extricate himself. After a yorv interesting- contest, Hieks won from Fouhy. Barnes was rather fortunate in securing a win from Smith after a bad start. Tho hardest gamo of the round was that of Severno and Wild, the latter playing sound chess, and makinz a hard light of it tup to the 44th move, where ho committed a blunder, and resiu-ne.l shortly afterwards. The following arc details of the play:— Kelliue- v. Ewen (Queen's Pawn Game). —Iho early stages of tho game were confined mainlv to manoeuvring for position. Selling initiated a strong attuck, winch forced Ewen to lose a bishop oil Hie 29th move. Black's position ' was hopeless, and he resigned on the 36th move. Fouhv v. Hicks (Queen's Pawn IrF= milar).—Hicks played black, and built up a strong attack, winning a rook for a kiiiuht, and a pawn to the gocd by the 29th move. Later on ho gave up the exchancre to gain a strong pawn position on the queen side, forcing Fouhy's resignation on the 54th move. Barnes v. Smith (Ruy Lopez).—This came 60on became serious for Barnes, who. bv a weak 11th move, lost a bishop. Smith, however, allowed Barnes to develop a strong combination-, whereby ho won his aiteen on the 30th move, Smith resigning shortly afterwards. . ™™™ B v> Wlld (Centre Counter Gambit)— This stone developed very evenly until the 44th move, when Wild (black) played a weak move, allowing Severno to win a knight with a check, and the eichamro of queens. Eleventh Round. _ Tho afternoon was devoted to bowling, and tho eleventh round was begun at 7.30 p.m. Mason wr,n from Smith on tho thirtieth mpvo. Barnes defeated Ewen after a lively game, the winner pliyics in great form. Kelling succcmhjxl to Severno. Ha made a miscalculation which gave, him a hopeless position and ho resigned at movo 29. The following aro some details of tho play.-. Smith v. Mason (Ruy Lopezj.-Siirith played white and his tenth movo lost him the exchange of rook for knight. Ho resigned on the thirtieth move. Barnes v., Ewen (Irregular).—This game was of tho irregular varioty, tho position being eased by a number of exchanges. Barnes launched an attack on his 15th move, and' Ewon, making a weak reply, lost a bishop on the 17th move. He resigned on the 23th move. Kelling v. Severne (Ruy Lopez).—This game proceeded very evenly, until the "mid" game, where Kelling, by taking a piece with rook instead of pawn, on his 28th move, lost the rook. He resitrned immediately. Tho eleventh round will continue todav, at f1.30 a.m., and the twelfth round will start in the afternoon.
