WOMEN BANK CLERKS
Women bank clerks in the provincial branches up and down tho country aro rallying to the support of tho Association of Women Clerks and Secretaries in their campaign against the policy of turnuie: women out of banks, states a London exchange. "By every post we receive letters from girls who say they are organising branches of our association in their banks," said Miss Dorothy Evans to a "Daily News" representative. "Tim Women's Industrial League has promised rssistance in organising these country branches. In several of the foreign and colonial banks," she continued,- 'the temporary girl clerks have been placed on the permanent staff, but there is no doubt that in the English banks a groat many girls have received tlieir notices. In many cases their places are not being taken by tho ex-Service men whom they are keening out of work, according to the Bank Clerks' Guild. A girl who came to this office told me her job had been taken by a boy of 17 years old who had just left school." The organisers of the association have decided to approach the directors of the banks immediately on the matter of the formation of a Whitley Council for the clerks, on which women will be adequately represented. "Tf the directors do not eive ns their promise to consider fairly the women's claims for enual opportunity and equal pay," said Miss Evans, "we have another weapon we can u?e. What our plans are we shall keep a secret: until the evening of our mass mpeling on November 18 at Winchester Housi-. But T can promise tbero will bo no strike of women bank clerks."
