It is authoritatively estimated that the present strength of the German armed forces is over one million, composed of an army of 400,000, a navy of 12,000, temporary volunteers or army reserves numbering 150,000 or 200,000, civic guards 300,000 or 400,000, armed constabulary 40,000 or 50,000. The last three are controlled by the Ministry of the Interior. They are regarded as a. contravention of the Peace Treaty, and this fact has been notified to Germany by the Supreme Council.—Aus.-N.Z.
