HOLIDAY TRAFFIC.
THE RAILWAYS BUSY REVENUE PROSPECTS GOOD. The slalioumasler at Tlioi'mlon yesterday furnished a reporter with some interesting items of inftirmnlinii regarding the holiday trallic. This traffic is reckoned to commence .about December 18. Some, yours ago it used to ho a very difficult problem for the railway officials to deal with, as the traffic resolved itself very largely into big rushes that occurred 011 December 23 and 21. This year the traffic, has taken on a different aspect; and though it has actually been heavier than that of the last Christmas holidays, preceding the war-time "cut" in the service, it has been easier to deal with. The explanation is that people have been selling out: earlier upon their journeys, and so have not caused anything like the congestion that was formerly experienced. Apparently they are taking longer holidays now away from their homes. This must be duo, in part at least, to the amount of money in circulation. It is, at any rale, a notable fact, when one considers how railway fares have advanced. "The revenue hero fhows a very substantial increase this year," said the reporter's informant. "I understand thero is a similar increase to be observed in other centres. I think it will I>b found to be rather a startling one. It necessarily -will be, because we had very poor figures last year." The unfavourable weather conditions prevailing on Boxing Day and New Year's Day made the local excursion traffic somewhat disappointing. About (100 peonle. however, look train yesterday for Packakariki, Plimmerton. and Paremata. Special provision to cope with an expected influx of visitors to the Lyall Ray carnival was made, but, strangely enough, the railway officials \vore_ notable to identify the arrival of a single additional passenger as being connected with the carnival.
