LABOUR TROUBLES
U.S. INDUSTRIAL CONFERENCE CRITICISED. (Kec. December Si, ?45 a.m.) > Washington, December 2D.. Mr. Samuel Gompers (president of tlio American Federation of Labour) lias issued a vigorous criticism of tho failure of President Wilson's industrial confcrenco to recogniso definitely trades unions as a basis for representation. Mr. Gompers said that any plan to establish or maintain anything like fair relations between workers and employers must avoid compulsory features, declaring that tho mass of American workers wer'o American, citizens, and in that sovereign citizenship of free men proposals for compulsory labour / wero repugnant. "In order to promote constructive and permanent changes that will eliminate tho causes of much industrial unrest," Mr. Gompers, said, "tho conference should consider governmental agencics to provide necessary information and assistance in obtaining a continuous betterment of working conditions. This problem must ultimately be worked out by employers and employees, with tho assistance of tho Government."—Reuler.
