MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Mr P. L, Rollings, S.M., presided over a short sitting of the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning. Isadore Jacobus, a middle-aged man, , who had ono previous conviction for \ drunkenness, was convicted of his second, i offence and was fined J-l, and for committing an indecent act was fined .£5, with the alternative of 48 hours' imprisonment. . James Wilson was also convicted or drunkenness, and as ho hod two previous convictions against him, ho was fined <£2, with the option of fourteen. days' imprisonment John Harold O'Brien and Douglas Lewis, two young men, wore jointly charged with using threatening behaviour in Featherston Street. The two were engaged in a street brawl when the police came on the scene and arrested them. They, were fined £\ each. A man named Angus Albert PollocK was charged with tlio theft of a box of butter, valued at £5 us, Bd., the property of tlio Union Steam Ship Company. Pollock attributed the commission of the offence to tlie fact that he was drunk at the time. On tlio night of December 27, Pollock, who is 35 years of age, was seen removing from the s.s. ICaliu. while that vessel was moored at the wharf at Greymouth a box of butter, which he dumped. Dctoctivc-Scrgeant Eawle, who prosecuted, stated that there were eight previous convictions against Pollock, including theft, threatening behaviour, vagrancy, and resisting the police. Pollock was sentenced to a month's imprisonment. Walter Wilson pleaded guilty to tlio charge of assaulting Charles Green, and claimed that he had been given very strong provocation. According to ths ovidence, tlio two men, who were friends, went to the Princess Hotel, in Molesworth Street, to have a drink. While conversing, Green, it wns alleged, mado a remark which was resented. They agreed to "have it out," and on going outside Wilson asked for an explanation, and the alleged assault took place. The two men made friends again on Green apologising. Wilson, who was a first'offender, was fined A in default seven days lmprisoument.
