Providing the weather holds fine the New Year week promises to be as bright and busv as any on record in Wellington city. Tho last few days, following upon a scourging electric storm, have given evnrvono a touch of real summer, and its "glow engenders the hope that there will Ire no further meteorological upsets until the holidays aro ended. Tennis players and others interested in that graceful and popular sport cannot afford to allow their attention to wander far from the Wellington College grounds, where tho Now Zealand championships are being decided. On NewYear's Da-v the Wellington provincial championship tournament will commence, and as tho entries aro numerous thoro is much interest locally in tho tourney. The bowling fraternity, who have kid a wretched experience so far this summer, will try to get back .a "bit of their own" this week. Tho Wellington Centre's tournament will commence on tho city greens at 9 a.m. on Thursday, and rink 'play will continue on Friday and Saturday, leaving the finals to he played out next week. An event which many people havo been looking forward to is tho Victory Gala Rnd Venetian Carnival, to be held at Lvall Bay on New Year's Day, and the Friday and Saturday, following. Wellington is a stranger to such sea-side frivolities, but the Lyall Bay residents havo decided that there is no Toason why it should remain so. There is tho beach-second to none in New Zealand— and a new, clean little town at the back of it to provide an appropriate setting. An energetic committee with a dynamic secretary promise diversions for everyone who cares to go along. The arrangements made arc said to be very complete, and all that is now desired is fine weather and a big infusion of tho carnival spirit to make the gala a complete success. For those who favour the exciting recreation of the turf, there are to bo races at Marton and Tauhercnikau on New Year's Day and tho Friday following. ' . ' , ~ Trains wi'l run excursions as 01 old into the country, and the Duchess and Cobar will ply across the harbour on a time-table to suit holiday-makers. The chief theatrical entertainment on New Year's Night will be the Williamson Grand Opera Company in Lucia di Lamniermoor."
