BIG NEW YEAR ATTRACTION. Those who have witnessed the Venetian Carnival held each year at Manly, Sydney, will have somi; idea what excitement prevails at that beautiful watering place during the carnival; and a similar effort is to be made at Lyall Bay this New Tear. Wellington does not as a rule provide carn'vals like other cities, but the public is promised something very special at Lyall Bay on January 1. 2, and 3. Those at the head of the arrangements state that night will be as day, for the greatest bady of electric lighting ever known in Wellington has been provided for LyalUjfinv during the carnival, and Mr. ,f. ESHtyder, of the British and General Electric Company, together with Mr. Lauchlan, of the Corporation Lighting Department, have gone to a great deal of trou'blo to make ail effective display. Space prevents us giving a full list of tile hundreds of events that are set down on an exceptionally fine programme, which, by the way, can be purchased now almost everywhere, and at streets stalls. However, the public should receive plenty, for their money at the bay during the carnival. Amongst a fine list of attractions are: .£SO tour for the person that can estimate the number of special tram tickets eokl'by the night of January 3. Theso special tiam tickets are on sale at street stalls, vnr'ous shops, also on sale by the tram conductors, and at the tram tickets offices,; Courtenay Place, G.P.O. waitingshed deiwt, nnd ticket office, Thorndon end. The ticket is priced Is., which includes a return journey fare from Courtenay Place to Lvall Bay, and' a coupon for the above estimating competition. Ballot boxes are at each street stall. All that is. necessr.-v is to buy ft Victory Gala tram ticket, fill in the estimate, "and dron the coupon port'on in one of the ballot boxes, either now or keep the coupon until visiting Lyall Bay, where ballot boxes will lie provided during the carnival. Whether the weather be wet or fine on the gala days'matters not so far as the tram tickets and estimat'ng competition arc concerned, as the tram ticket will hold good for future use if January 1, 2, and 3 are wet; so also will the estimating competition goon, and the winner be declared.
The athletic events promtes to be; exceptionally attractive; likewise the jazz stunts; also the grand procession, which leaves the Kilbirnie Reserve at 10 a.m. sharp for Lyall Hay oil New Year's Day. Judging of the different in the procession will take p'.aco at IC'i'ljiruic btfore the departure for the bay, therefore it is imperative that all intending to be in the procession must be ready to fall in to their respective places allotted to them at the lCilbirnie Reserve at 9 a.m.
There will be substantial awards for the l«st decorated car, motor-lorry, cycle, dog-cart, gig, horse-drawn vehicle;. Queen in car, representation of notable picture artists, Charlie Chaplin, representation of great genera's, pierrots, fancy costume, fancy quartet, representation of the ex-lvaiser, best trades display, and many other sections, details of which can 'be obtained from the secretary, 181 Fc-atherston Street. A grand submarine explosion at 3.15 p.m. daily will give the public an attractive display, whilst the life-saving contests for tho new shield will doubtless prove a fine show. Tlio Bahv Carnival on the third day is ex* pcct'ed to attract a large number of entries. Musical competitions. A long list of athletic events run under the N.Z.A.A.A. rules, also hundreds of races for young ami old, and a large number of side-shows, from Punch and .Tody to mock courts, and hitting the Kaiser; don key r'des for the children will be another feature; pierratls. jazz stunts, Highland dancing, and hundreds of other splendid at(racti:ms. No cash will bo taken at anv stalls or shows whatever, all shows 'being run under the coupon .system, end elaborate arrangements hive been made for supplying the public with the coupons. There will be s'xnenny and threepenny coupons: The shopkeepers of LyaU'Eay who trade there permanently have arranged to accept these counons al'o, so Hint by dealing at the shops where coupons are accepted the public will bo helping tin Gala Committee, who*;", effort, by the way, is lo raise money to provide swimmers with a proner Vfe-snving club and meeting-house and training rooms. Spccinl trams will run at minute intervals from Couvtenay Place. r
