OIL-BURNING FURNACES

ADVOCATED BY CITY ENGINEER, The City Engineer (Mr. W. H. .Morton), who has just returned from a trip to 'America and England, is now a very strong advocate for oil-burning furnaces, and consequently for the establishment in a convenient site 011 the waterfront of reservoirs (0 store the crude oil when it is pumped from the ''oil tanke.rs." The question as to which, would be the most convenient site has yet to be considered.

That Mr. Morton is on the right lines is borne out by what is being done elsewhere. Under the heading of "Keeping Up to Date," the Dundee "People's Journal" of September 27 says:— "In the near future there is every likelihood that the city will have an extensive installation of oil tanks, from which vessels trading with the port will be supplied with oil fuel. The Harbour Trustees have been npproached by one of the leading oil companies, and inquiries made regarding the accommodation that eonld he provided for tanks. The trustees at present have less ground than t.liey would wish at their disposal, but it may be taken as certain that means will be found of supplying the site needed for a project of this nature, so important to the city's shipping interests. It is a matter of special concern to the Development Committee, and if U:ey are appealed to it will no doubt he regarded by them as having a fust claim on their attentions. There is no question of the importance which will be attached in future to the provision of bunkering oil at ail ports. In America vessels are being extensively converted and built for oil fuel. The same process is now going on in I'his country, and it will soon be a matter of imperative necessity if our ports are to cope with the changed conditions that tlicv be adequately complied with oil installations. The city" has a vital interest in the question, and it is to be .hoped, that no time will be lost in providing in full measure for the requirements of shipping ill this most important direction."
