ANNUAL CONFERENCE LIST OF REMITS' Tlio sixth annual conference of th£ Women Teachers' Association of New Zealand will commence at tlio Education Board's offices at 10 a.m. 011 Tuesday next, following the presidential address (by Miss Chaplin, 8.A., Canterbury), and the presentation of tlio annual report and balance-sheet, the following remits will be considered:— (1) "That ill every large school (Grade V and upwards), the responsibilities of the senior class mistress shall include: (n) Special attention to tlio health, morals, and manners of the girls; (b) tlio general supervision and teaching of a correlated scliemo of lessons in elementary physiology and hygiene; (c) tlio general oversight of. all those matters which especially affect the welfare of girls—such mistress .to have a status and salary equal to that of tlio infant mistress."—Canterbury. (2) "That in schools of Grades V C, and upwards, (lie first assistant woman should have .a salary equivalent, to that of tile infant mistress, and that she shbuldi be recognised as first woman in her own department With special responsibilities towards the girls."—Wellington.. , (:>) "In every town thero should bo a special class, with a specially trained teacher, for children of retarded mental development."—Jlawkc's Bay. (4) That in large towns a loom in one school be .provided, together with '.a specially trained. and ojialified teacher, for education of children who are mentally\ deficient or are of retarded mental development."—Taranaki. (5) "That this association urges the Minister to provide moans for suitably educating children of sub-normal mental powers, and to this cud that all scholars' be classified from the ago of iiine years."—Canterbury. ((>) "That the anomalous position 'of the first woman assistant in Grays IV schools, where she is superseded by a mn assistant], • should be rectified."— Otcgo. (7) "That provision for stall ng, similar to tluvt in separate infant schools, should be made for the infant department of mixed schools."—Wellington.. (8)' "That, in the Superannuation. Act an undue handicap is placed on women in relation to tiroir teaching service, and this branch considers that they should be allowed,to complete 40 years' service."—Otago. (9) "That it strong protest be niade against the different interpretations of Iho Superannuation Act made by the. various education boards, and this branch considers that, in the interests of justice, the Act, as regards the compulsory retirement of teachers, should bo .interpreted uniformly throughout the Dominion."—Otago. (10) "That, owing to the probability of sex hygiene being introduced as a subject in our primary schools, the Department is urged to circulate widely among parents suitable pinipiilcts dealing with tlio subject."—Taranaki. (11) "That provision should be _ made for a women teachers' representative on the Grading Appeal Board."—Canterbury. • (i2i The following resolution was forwarded to tlio secretary in Juno last, but has not been sent in as a remit. It is, however, appended for discussion, if tlio conference so desire:—"That, as in accordance with the provisions of No. 15 of the Stall's and Salaries Hegulations, an infant mistress has been appointed .in schools of Grade V C, and upwards,' tlio Poverty' Branch of the Women Teachers' Association recognises the import unco of Hie duties of tlio infant mistress, and respectfully rocommends that the position should carry the grado of ' salary co-CQUaI with that of tho first assistant in the school. Poverty Bay. Tlio business of the- conference will also include consideration of ( a number of subjects ..wjiich-havo been discussed by the branches during the year. .Those are "Helicving .Teachers," "Tho Homo and the School," "How to Promote Health Habits in Children," "Education of- Girls," "Sex Hygiene."
