WILLIAMSON GRAND OPERA. The opera season to be .naiiguratcd on Monday! night is assured of a hearty weleomo from Wellington audiences. 'I ho company arrive from Sydney by the Manuka. The opening production. Gounod's. .."Faust, has immortalised the composer in tie ranks of nineteenth century musicians, and its sbul-stirring harmonics will never lose their fascination for musiclovers. Both .In staging and musical presentation "Faust" is said to bo one of tho most elaborate and attractivo of tho operas in tho repertoire of the grand opera company. It is said to have proved one of tho company's triuniphs in Sydney and Mclbourno with Miss Amy Castles as tho ill-fated Marguerite. Ralph Errollo, tho tenor from the Metropolitan Opera, New York, has one of his greatest roles as Faust, and Alfredo Valenti has won high praise for his rendering of tho role of Mephistophcles. "Tales of Hoffman," tb bo staged on Tuesday, is f|' u ' c new to New Zealand audiences. Offenbach's opera lias become very popular in other parts of tho world on account of the "remarkable boautjr of the vocal music. In this production it is said that tho strength of the W llliamson company will bo further illustrated by a brilliant cast. On Wednesday night Amy Castles will appear as Mimi.in La Bohome." Walter Wheatley, a noted tenor, will mako his first appearance in New Zealand in this opera as Rudolpho. "Lucia di Lamroermpor," with n strong cast, will bo presented 011 Thursday night, "II Trovatoro" on Friday, and "Madamo Butterfly" on Saturday, completes the first week's bill. _ file O,K ' week's programme will consist of t lales of Hoffman" on Monday, 'Tj"'st on Tuesday. On Wednesday night'the double bill, "Cavnlleria Ri.stieana" and 1 Pagliacci" will be gi/on for the first time. On Thursday "Miuknflc Butterfly will bo repeated. "La Bobeme" # will be played on Friday. "CVivalleria Kusti* eana" and "I Pngliacci" will be given at a special matinee performance on Saturday; "Carmen" is the opera sel(wt-o-l for representation on Saturday night. The Bristol being closed for the Christ3nns holidays has necessitoted the box plans being transferred to the Grand Opera House, main entrance. Plans tor the second week open at the Opera House on Tuesday morning. Peggy Doran as Princess Patricia, 'Dorotliv Hastings as Agatha (the Prime Minister's daughter); pro mier danseuse, Macigie Dickinson; prpmier danseur, Sidney Tates; Minnie Everett has invented and arranged tho ballets, marclics, and groupings. -Tlio music -has been composed bv the musical director (Victor Champion). W. R. Coleman, Geo. Upward, W. Coleman, jun., and C. Newman, and assistants have painted the scenery. The pantomimo was produced and is under the stags direction of Charles A. Wenman.
