GETTING TOGETHER
I Mr. P. G. DaUiell forwards the following open letter to the Primo Minister:— Sir, —In your speech, on the evening of the poll that has confirmed you in your leadership of our people, you paid your policy would be to bring us all together in tho common aim of producing as full a life as possible for the wholo community If. scorns opportune, therefore, at. this season when it is our custom to get together in the spirit taught us by the Carpenter of Nazareth, to urge you to investigate the question whether this policy of Retting together is not the governing rule or "law of the universe. I know that a business man venturing to ilpiil with fundamental things is commonly regarded by clergy and laity as eccentric, but I have been for many ycam and still am entrusted by competent business men with the. control, as chairman of directors, cf important financial interests, and with, a full sense of responsibility I say that in the course of several years' study of tho facts involved in inv practical experience—with a view to fofviii , ,' the industrial problem—l havo found every act of every natural thing within my' knowledge governed by tins (simple rule of getfjiu together. And when T tested tho truth of this conclusion by reference to scientific, works and the new Testament I found that tl'e whole effort of Jesus was directed to the leaching of this one rule. Fo made it plain (see Matt. 2.1-31 to 4G) that the essential purpose of getting together is that we may supply one another's needs in the common aim of development and taught also that th'R simple rule is "the whole law" (Matt. 7—12. and 22— tO). He said (Matt. 5-18) "till hoaven and earth pass, one jot, or one tittle, shall not pass cf the law till all be fulfilled," or (Luke 16-171 "i f 's easier for heaven and earth to pase than ono tittle of the law to fall," and in iny investigations I have not found one act of any natural thing in which the operation of this law has varied by "ono jot or tittle." Tn other words, I have not found ono instance of growth or development save in conformity with tins rule, or one case of destruction or waste eavo iu neglect of it. I hope you will give full consideration to this suggestion, because you will realise on reflection that if this governing law exists then Christian, Jew, nnd Mohammedan and the followers of all other creeds that have stood the test of time, can come together in obedience to Hub one law-which is Iho common basis of all such creeds-in a common, national, Imperial, and international organisation for the supplying of one another's needs. You will' find that the test of this suggestion is finite, siinnle. because if even cue act of ■'my natural thing can he proved in which the consequences have not been wholly determined by this simnle law then my suggestion is nonsense. If, however, the investigators could not in one. day find one act in life, not » governed they would no doubt feel justified in inquiring further into the operation of so wonderful a rule. I urge Hint such an investigation is not too much in .i - of yon in support of tho teaching of One who was crucified because He hreiurht us the news that the only way to human power and happiness w through Mlowing the simple rule o. gettim' together tn snpnlv the needs of ono another's J^ 111 The Terrace.
