Christchurch, December 23 Work at the city abattoirs went on as usual to-tlav. and the manager nnd tho scoretarv of the Slaughtermen's Union reKi'.rd the rumours of a strike as greatly exaggerated. The permanent men knockoff as usual at 5 p.m., and gave no indienlioii that they would not return in the niorninsr. There are hooks for twentysix men. and several roaster butchers sent their men out lo kill to-night in order to cope with the Christmas rush. All throiii.'h the week the permanent men hnvo put up larger tallies than usual. The casual men on their own initiative refused lo continue working when the council's committee gave ite final answer that the wages would be £\ ss. per week, or 355. per 100 for sheep and lambs. The ucrmanent men never asked the "casuals" to cease work', and the statement made to the contrary is said by the scero'ary of the Slamjhlcnnen's I'nion to be incorrect.
