THE HIDES MARKET
A CONFERENCE TO BE HELD. For'many months past there has been complaint from tho producers against tho method of control of tho price of hides within tho Dominion. There has been a controlled price for local consumption, and a free market for export, but all hides have had to bo first offered for sale to local buyers. It has been said that tho local buyers have taken the cream of the hides at the controlled prices, and that the owners have been allowed to sell tho others in the export market at very much higher prices Tho scheme has, according to accounts, been proved to be full of anomalies, and Mi" Mnssey promised in the House and elsewhere on several occasions, that the matter would have his attention as soon as ho could civc it. < Mr. Massey, in reply to an inquiry yestorday. said Hint a conference would be arranged very early in the new year of representatives of the agricultural and freezing industries, and of tho users of hides (the tanners), and tho users of leather (the bootmakers)..
