PROHIBITION MINORITY NOW 1537. Returns that rcnchcd the electoral officer yesterday miiko a slight change in tho results of the licensing poll as recorded to date, '.he majority against Prohibition standing now nt 1537. Tho votes of the soldiers in Samoa were distributed as follow :— Continuance 34 Siate Purchase 1s Prohibition 1G An amended return from Gisborno is as follows:— Continuance 22SG ; State Purchase 627 Prohibition 3GSI Tho national totals are now as follow! — Continuance 231,342 , Stato Purchase 30,751 Prohibition 2(H),559 Tho official counts are now commeneinir in some of the districts, but tho results in ninny cases may not he known ui.til after Christmas. The official counts will cover the votes cast by means of seamen's ami absent voters' permits. The Act. under which the licensing poll was taken provides that in order to be carried ;n issue must poll an. absolute maioritv of the votes, cast, that is, nioro than half of the total votes. It also nrovidea that, in the event of no issue securing the requisite number of votes, Continuance shall be deemed to bo carried. The number of votes included in tho figures shown above is 522,655, and an absolute majority would bo 261,328. The Prohibition vote now recorded is 260,551), or 769 votes short of an absolute majority.
