Coradine on Tuesday morning and asked him whether lie would consont to bo a candidate for the seat on the Trust Lands Trust recently rendered vacant ■by the death of Mr. T. B. Michcll. After consideration, Mr. Coradino consented, and was later nominated by tho following —Messrs. G. M'Haftie, A. W. Chapman, G. If. Perry, and G. VV. Sellar. Tho hnlf-ypavly summoned meeting of Stonehenge Lodge was lu>ld on Monday evening, Bro, W. H. Truilgeon, A.D., presiding. The lodge adjourned for ten minutes out of respect to tho lato Bro. T. 13. Miehell. Bro. .T, 11. Laughton, Grand Treasurer, was present, and gave an ablo report on consolidation. Bro. J. A. Brown was elected a trustee. Bros. S. Davey, E. Newlawl, and J. Smith were presented with P.A, collars, Bro. \7. Gourlay with a P.D.P. collar, and Bro. J. A. Brown with a P.A. diploma. The following officers were installed by Bro. If. J. M'JCeny/e:—D.P., Bro. E. Tho Masterton fire-bell was rung eight times during the last quarter, twice 'for chimney fires and six times for actual fires, four of which wero not incipient. The fire loss for the town was estimated at £G'Jo, whilo the insurnnco paid out totalled £558. The actual amount of insuranco on tho properties effected was £19S0, and tho combined value of the properties and contents £1585. At tho monthly meeting of tho Wairarapa Hospital and Charitablo Aid Board it was reported that nine families in Masterton wero in receipt of charitable aid, and another application was granted at tho meeting. Accounts amounting to £4900 12s. wero passed for payment. The matron of the Masterton Hospital forwarded her resignation, which was accepted with regret, it being resolved to prepare a testimonial of appreciation of her term in office. Tho matron's reports for tho month wero:—Masterton: Admissions 44, discharges 46, deaths 1, remaining in hospital 41. Grcytown Hospital: Admissions 16, discharges 19, remaining 13. Paliiatua Hospital: Admissions 13, discharges 12, remaining 10. Buchanan Homo: One new applicant was admitted, ono died, and tliero are 25 remaining. Solway Homo: 16. At tho ago of 71 years an old resident of Masterton, in tho person of Mrs. Gorti frey Russell, passed away at her son's residence in Pownall Street, on Monday evening. o deceased, who was born in Kent, IKgland, and camo to New Zealand about iO years ago, i* survived by threo sons, all of whom livo in tho Wairarapa. Tho usual luncheon of the Masterton Progressive League was held in Messrs. Hugo and Shearer's tea rooms yesterday afternoon, when interesting addresses were given by Dr. Carpenter and Mr. Williams, of the Chautauqua. During the month of November tho Masterton County Council received in rates £1411 ss. 2d. Tho death occurred at Carterton on Tuesday of Mrs. J, M'Guinness, at the ago of 76 years. Deceased "is survived by four sons and four daughters. Councillor W. ,T. Wcleli has been reelected chairman of the Masterton County Council. At tho council meeting on Tuesdny the conduct of business was adjourned for ono hour out of respect to Mr. Welch, in (ho death of his sister, Mrs. E. Perry. MANAWATU Satisfactory arrangemonts havo now been mado for tho first eleven of tho Palmerston North Cricket Club to go on tour. 'Tho team lcavo hero to-day. and will play tho Napier High School after which they will proceed to Hamilton and meet tho High School team tliero. They will then go on to Auckland, whero they will make an endeavour to capture tho coveted llcnthcotc-AVilliaras Shield from the Auckland Grammar School, at present holders of tile trophy. An inquiry was held at the courthouse at Palmerston North on Tuesday by Mr. J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., in order to dccido in which local authority the bridge over the Oroua River between Glen Oroua and Rangiotu should be vested. Mr. F. 11. Cooke appeared for the Manawatu County Council, and Mr. J. P. Innes for the Kairanaga County Council, these being the two bodies interested. After evidonco had been he.ird on both hides, the commissioner said that without giving his final opinion, it seemed to him that the intention was that the bridge 'was to open up tho Crown sections in the vicinity. Tho Manawatu County got no benefits, and if the other county got any benefit tho cost of maintenance should bo in proportion to tile amount of revenuo the Crown received and tho additional rates which would-accrue to the county. Tho Crown was apparently getting all tho benefit, and he could not seo that the bridge was at present of any benefit to either county. Tho ICairanga County was also responsible for tho upkeep of tho road. Ha would propare a report and submit it to tho Department.

At a meeting of tho General Committee of the Mnnawntu and AVest Coast Agricultural and Pastoral Association, a motion of symptliy was passed with the relatives of the lato Mr. foster-Pratt, who, it was stated, hnd been ono of the original promoters of tho fjooioty, and had always tan an earnest worker for its welfare. A similar motion was passed to tho relatives of tho late Mr. ,T. Strang, of Gladstone, who had been a life member of the society.

At the meeting of tho Kairanga County Council, Mr. W. W. Wilsher, wlitV lia<l been n, councillor for quite a number of years, resigned Ills seat on account of having disposed of his property in tlio riding which ho had represented, Tho chairman and several members paid a high tribute to the valuable services rendered by l\ : .m lo the counly, and expies?ed regret at losing him. Correspondence was received from tho Minister in connection witli tho exhibits of school work from Ihe Cook Islands, which wero entered for competition at the last show, ond it was resolved to recommend the Educnfion Department to endeavour to arrange for competition from Samoa and tho t'iji Islands at future shows. At a meeting at ParewanuionTuesday, Mr. K. Newman received a very warm and hearty welcome. The school room in which his address was hold was well filled, and his speech was listened lo attent voly throughout. At the conel.usion, on tho propcwil of Mr. 11. Dalrvniple, seconded by Mr. A. Anion, Mr. Newman was voted a hearty voto of thanks and confidence, which was carried by acclamation. Mr. Gordon Eliott was in tho chair.
