DISTRIBUTION OF PRIZES
Tho prizes won by students of the Wellington Technical Collego for work dono during the present year wero distributed by tho Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke, C M.G.) _at a ceremony held in the City Council Chamber yesterday afternoon. Mr, G. Frost, chairman of the Technical Education Board, presided over the gathering, which included {he (■tudoiits oif tho college and tho teaching stall.
In the courso of his address, Mr. Frost referred to the ohange i that had taken placo in the directorship of tho college caused by the appointment of tho former director. Mr. W. S. La Trobe, to tho position of Director of Technical Education. Mr. Frost paid a high tribute to the good work that had been dono by the acting-director, Mr._ Bolton, during the time they had wjiitod for tho neiv director, Mr. J. H. -Howell, to take charge. The sito of the now collego at Mount Cook would be'.a. great, mcnt on tho present site. After 2o years struggling they had succeeded in getting the new site, and Wellington was to be congratulated- on the fact that it would soon have a fino now technical college. However, tliey would not- rest content with tho land that had been secured, for they felt that they must havo plenty of air space for tho ohildren. Mr. Frost referred to the success of tho Technical Collego Senior Cadets in tho recent tournament which, ho said, reflected great credit on the college. He concluded by wishing the students a good time during their holidays. . Mr. J. 11. Howell, Director of the Technical College, said he hoped the future development of the collego would bo such that the people of Wellington would be able to regard it with pride, and that they would be able to feel that it was not only the largest, but the best, institution of its kind in the Dominion. (Applause".) Ho hoped that the work of the home science department would continue to improve and increase, as it was of the utmost importance to tho community The number of students for tho year was 1310, as against 1139 yast year, 640 of the number being frea students and G7O paying students. It was gratifying to know that very shortly the new college would bo erected at .Mount Cook, and he trusted that all students, past and present, would continue to evince an interest in tho new institution. • Ho urged the students of the college to make themselves useful citizens so that ' (hey would never go slow in their work and never b» indifferent to the needs of others. Mr. Howell concluded by thanking tho Technical Education Board for the courtesy they had extended to him during tho time that lie was prevented through illness from assuming tho directorship of the college. Before distributing tho prizes, Mr. Luke said that during tho pa?t year tho work dono at tho college had been very effective and redounded to the credit of the students and the teaching staff. The Milyor referred to the departure of the late director, Mr.' W. S. La Trobe, to take up his new duties as the supoivisor of technical education in the Dominion. He felt that the selection of Mr. La Trobe for the new post wns a distinct compliment to the college- Mr. Bolton, who had been acting-director, wa= a "white man" and a gentleman, and he had filled the gap in the directorship with, great loyalty, faithfulness andability. (Applause.) The new director was a man of high educational attainments and, on behalf of the citizens, tho Mayor heartily welcomed Mr. Howell to Wellington.
