FEATHERSTON CAMP TRAGEDY
A SOLDIER'S DEATH. In connection with the death of a discharged soloicr named Frederick Deavenport Patterson at Featherston Military Camp rc-ci'iitty an inu.ue.st was hold by the Actintr-CoroniT (Mr. C. WJ Ritchie, J.P.), who riituriiL'd n verdict that the deceased hud committed suicide while in a melancliolv state ot' mind Oa November 24 last deceased was admitted \to the Featherston Military Hospital, ami on November 2G attempted to commit, suicide by taking poison. On his recovery he became very depressed, and instructions were eiven that he. wa.s to be kept under close rilwrvation. nnd was to be attended bv a guard. On December i Patterson and his guard wero standing near the camn entrance when a motor lorry apiiroaehcd. nncv deceased threw himself under the wheels of the vehicle. Although the lorry woe immediately pulled ud. deceased was pinned to the ground, with one wheel resting on his shoulders. He was promptly removed to the camp hospital, but soon succumbed to his iniiirics.
