MR. GKAIGIE DECLARES HIMSELF AN INDEPENDENT. lij Tolegraph—Prese ABBociation. Timaru, December o. • Mr. James Craigie addressed tho electors in the Lyceum Theatre to-night. There was,a good attendance, olid the .Mayor presided. Alter racrring to the war and tho part taken by New Zealand, and eulogising Sir James Allen for his work in connection therewith, he briefly reviewed the work of the National Government, lie then spoilt some time oi the work, of tho Industries' Commission, many of' whose recommendations were found in the programmes of Mr. .Mas-cy and Sir Joseph' Ward. Ho dealt on the import-men of hydro-electricity, and the necessity for workers' homes and greater encouragement to the lishing industry. Ha announced himself an independent, disapproving of party bickerings, and said he lipped to see a Cabinet formed the lx'st men of both parties. Many riiiestions were asked, and in answering tliem tho candidate was subjected t much interruption by a small section of the meeting. Tho Mayor two or thr times threatened in close the meeting. A vote of thanks and confidenco was proposed, and an amendment of no confidence was moved. Amidst uproar thr motions were put, and tlio Mayor declared the former carried.
