District Nursing in Maori Settlements,
I'iw people understand and appreciate tho work the heroic nurses of New Zealand do under appalling conditions, and in many cases it is only women of very special kind—cultured and devoted—who faco the diabolical conditions existing in remote Maori settlements and scattered farms (states the "N.Z. Observer"). Nurse- Ferguson, of JCaitaia, is an excellent example of tho kind of lady who goes about the district nursing business with a brave heart, and with little thoughts of self. This lady not only devotes her timeto her splendid profession under very great difficulties, but has actually built her own residence. In the summer time, sho does her great round in a caravan, but you have probably heard what tho winterless north is like in winter. Sho then travels the dreadful inudways of the north on -horseback attired in lcug leggings and the garb best suited to the conditions. She may bo seen ploughing through the mud, splashed from boots to hat, in the glutinous mud that there abounds. One often hears of the self-sacrifice of doctors. In comparison their lives appear to bo perpetual picnics punctuated with fat fees. You haven't heard of any doctor living in a dripping tent for a. month or so and dying there for tho benefit of humanity, havo you? There are cases among tho nurses of tho kind,

A Policy of Help. "Wherever there is trouble amongst any section of tho' community .'.; Government worthy of the name, should set out to lift the people out of the mire, said Dr. Newman at Maranui last night, "and no Government is worth supporting unless it has an active policy of doing. We have to bo out for a policy of help. There are some people who think that we 6hould have a policy of pulling down everything, that we should pull down those who are fainy well to do, that we should go about liko a bull in a china shop, in fact. My own opinion is that if wo have a policy of helping the poor, in ways that I htiva indicated, and of weeding out.insobriety, wo shall be fulfilling tho highest functions of government. . . . Mv policy is that we should endeavour to remedy evil in every shape and form, and try to make this world a great deal better' place than it hns been in the past. Wo enn't mako it a heaven, wo can't make it a Utopia, but my opinion is that we can make it n great deal better placn to live in through tho activities of government." '
