HOUSING SCHEME
PROGRESS AT NORTHLAND. Touching on the municipal housing scheme the Mayor (Mr. J. I'. Luke) stated yesterday that the frames of the first two houses to be crectod ou the recently; acauired block' of land near the Karori tunnel are now pretty well up, aud preparatory work in connection with the foundations of others was being- done. In tiiis connection he was sorry to say that the work had been hung up owing to ceniont being /unprocurable. Tho niles and foundations for these houses wero all to bo of concrete, ano', in order to gain dispatch, tho superstructure of the first lot would bo of timber. Tho area at Northland would provide sites for between fifty and sixty houses. Tho formation of the new streets through the block was well forward, and tho preparatory work in conncction with tlio retioulation of tho block for water and drainace was in hand. What is interesting in view of contingencies is tho news that surveys are now being made for an extension of tho elec : trie tramway system'from the Karon line to the new area of land acquired by the Citv Council in the vicinity of Wilton's Bush, which is to be opened up and built uoon as soon as circumstances permit. This lino will ultimately be tho connccting link between the Karori and Wadestown line, forming a splendid, runabout loop that is bound to be popular with tram trippers.
