NEW AWARD SOUGHT

The 1917 aware' of the Wellington private hotel, ten-room, nml restaurant employees having expired, tho union has tiled new demands, in which considerable improvements iu wages and conditions are sought. The privato hotel -workers ask that their hours bo regulated by the following new clauses:— fa) Thn hours of work for all workers comins within the scope of this award shall not exceed forty-eight in any one week, and eight, in any one day, and shall bo worked' within a margin of ten hours in nny one day. (b) Where a "margin" is herein referred to shall be reckoned from the lime an employee goes on duty to the time he or eho goes off dutv: and all "meal time" shall be ini (iluflcd in the said margin, fc) Except in suecial circumstances workers, shall not. be brought back to work after the dav's work is finished, until after mi interval of at least fourteen hours, and ■workers shall be paid at the rnte of time and a half for the time by which such interval is curtailed. It is provided that the -workins: hours prescribed , shall be worked out. within six days only,- and that every employee shall receive one clear dav off in every seven. Double pay is asked for for work done on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Labour Day, King's Birthday, and Anzac Day. In addition the union nsks for two weeks' holiday on full pny each year after the completion of twelve months' service.' The minimum rates ofiwages asked for bv the private hotel employees are as follow, with, the present rates in parentheses :— Kitchen.—(a) Where five or more lianas are- employed: Chef, .£5 10s. (XI 55.), linen maids XI 12s. Gd. (no provision). Prouoseo.' rates for casual labour are set out in the demands, which also contain provision for overtime and work done on special occasions. Demands on behalf of the restaurant workers are on verv much the snme lines. The wages asked for pastrycooks are .U 10s. (first), and X 3 15s. (second). Thn restaurant workers' case will bo considered by the Conciliation Council on December 15, and the other dispute will come before the council on December 1!). The cases will affect: workers within a tw-entv-five-milo radius of Wellington cih\ The assessors for flip union in both oases will be Mrs. N. Carey and Messrs. H. O'Malley and E. Kennedy.
