At a meeting to-night Mr. W. 8.Matheson, Independent Eeform candidate, dwelt on the turn tho political battle hiid taken fof the Masterton seat. After referring to the fact that he had stood down on two previous occasions in order to avoid vote splitting in Reform interests, he went on to explain .his position in regard to the latest developments concerning the Masterton seat. Mr. Mathesor. outlined the efforts made to avoid vote splitting between himself and Mr. Sykes, and stated that a committee representing the two candidates had endeavoured id arrive at an Understanding. Tils committee hnd met and had arrived at no decision, and he whs going to, the poll. Mr. Matheson tliett dealt with political questions of the day on tho lines of former speeches. As far a&.Sir Joseph Wiird, Mr. Massey, and Mr, Holland were concerned as leaders of parties, he said Mr. Miissey was the man for him. Mr. Massey was not clever, but ho stuck to his guns and had made good. Mr. Miitheson had an orderly meeting, and received a vote of thanks.
