GISBORNE

By Telegraph—Preas AssociationGisborne, November 2G. Mr W. D. Lysnar' addressed a largo gathering at the Opera Houso to-night, when he opened his campaign for tho Gisborne seat. Th* meeting ivws very orderly, aud tho speaker was given a good hearing. He said Miat ho regretted the necessity for standing against Sir James Carroll, but ho did so because the result of Sir James Carroll's work was not what it should have been. It seemed to him that no possible good could be done by Labour's notion in putting forward a candidate, who was an outsider. He had sympathy ivatli the legitimate grievances of Labour, and undertook to say they would have no stronger advocate than himself, bud )jo would not give countenance to extreme Labour. He felt that the present Government was not fully in sympathy wi'ih tho requirements of the people, and therefore stood as an Independent for sound, progressive measures and the extra production wanted at the present/ time. There should be no»friction between Capital and Labour. Native lands should bo opened up, and the agri- ' cultural and pastoral industry, which reI presented 87 per cent, of the total exporte of tlio'Dominion, would havq to he properly handled. Mr. Lysnar said that if returned there would "soon be sparks flying in the'-'House," if the finance, trusts, and Native land problems wero not sit once properly handled. The finance of tho country was in a most unsatisfactory state. By tho ihpavy taxation that had been levied tho people who hnd found the men with whom to fight tho Germans were also being asked to find the money lo pay the war expenses. This should bo paid out of loan money in the meantime, and the country ehottld pay only interest and sinking fund. All goods of German origiii should he specially taxed to meet Mio costs of the war. Questioned as to what 'his attitude, would lie on a no-confldcncc motion. Mr. Lysnar said Hi at Sir Joseph AVard had not definitely stated that lie would lie prepared to do without extreme Labour's help, and as Mr. Jfasse.y had made the position clear, provided Mr. Massey dealt with national problems in an efficient manner he would support him in ii no-confidence division.
