By Telegraph—Special Correspondent. Palmerston North, November 2i. Tho Palmerston North) Chamber ot Commerce held its annual meeting this evening. There was a good otlendaiico, and Mr. L. H. Collinson (president) was in tho chair. e „ Tho annual report stated wine so far as tho district was concerned undoubtedly tho most important event of the year was tho commencement of Hie preliminary work in connection with tho construction of tho Mangahao hydro-electric power scheme. Thanks were expressed to tho Vigilance Committee for its endeavours to expedito the work., tho chamber had also supported the ialmorston North Borough Council in its decision to immediately erect an a"*'ll- - power plant, which decision was fully fivo vears overdue. The railway' curtail* ment had caused a huge increase in mo tor transit, and had demonstrated 111 <j very emphatic manner the need for gooa permanent road surfaces. In referring to the Manawiatu Gorge road up of a board of control bv the Government was welcomed, and it' was stated that tiie road, when properly, made, securely fenced and widened, would lie one of the mast used in the North Island. The matter of making tho Post Office at Palmers lon North a c.hief ofiice 'had been consistently advocated and backed up by solid arguments, but so far without success, Other matters which had been supported and advocated included betler school accommodation, better railway communication, especially in rejard to tho Wairarapa line, from whence (it wiw impossible for people to journey to I almerston. do tiheir business, aiul return homo oil till? same day; better telephone facilities; improvement of rail way station and facilities; and bettor roitri surfaces. The. report r.nd balance-sheet were adopted. _ , \ letlvr was received from the uene-ral Manager of Railways thanking the chamber and tho Railway Transport Committee for the valuable assistance rendered to tho Department during tho rer/ut coal crisis in the direction of ensuring the carriage of a maximum ciiiniitity of goo(te of an essential and urgent character.The following officers were elected President, Mr. E.
