HEAVY FINES FOR PLAYING "HAZARDS" Fines of ,S1") each were imposed on Sara Peters and Cornelius -Murphy; by Mr. E. Paste, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court yesterday, for - tlio nffeuco of playing "hazards." Detective-Sersennt Itawle, who prosecutetf. told. the. Court that Plain-ciothes Constable Tricklebank and Constable Anderson saw a number of wharf labourers on the Queen's Wharf playing "hazards." As the police approached the party broko .up, and sub-equently adjourned to a lavatory; where the two accused wero caught in the act of playins the unlawful game. The . nice were seized, together with a sum. nf 2s. Gd. which was lying on the ground. The accused wero tiie ringleaders in the (ravne, ana' in spito of nil endeavours oil the part of the socrolary of the Water6ido Workers' Union and the polico to stop tlic game, they contimied to practice it. Some time ago drastic measures were taken by the union to stop the came, and it was only recently that it had started again. Mr. 11. T. O'Lcary, v.ho represented the accused, entered a plea of guilty, and submitted that it was a case for leniencv. His Worship remarked that it was a Kame which must be stopped, Each ccfendant would bo fined Jt'ls, and would be allowed seven days in which to pay. , OTHER 'PROSECUTIONS. 'A remand till to-morrow wa3 granted in the case of Richard Edmund Walsh, wVo was charged with the theft of various articles. values' at .CIO 9s. Gd., tho Jiropnrtv of Alexander Hobbs. Thomas Lowry, who had been twice ■previously convicted for using obsceno language, was sentenced to fourteen (lays' imprisonment for a like offence. On charges of drunkenness and a breach of his prohibition order he was fined 10s. and .£1 respectively. For insobrietv Joshua Ed», Annie DoKertv. Geonro Francis, and Robert Bruce Porteous were each fined J!l, and William Conriclc was finea' 10s. Four first offenders were fined 10s. each, and one oilier -was fined ss. MAINTENANCE CASES.

He had left complainant without any maintenance. and she was compelled to obtain, work in order to support her two children. Last week defendant drew 40 2s. of his' pension, aim .lost it on the races at Christehnrch. Complainant's statements were corroborated by other witnesses. The defendant, Albert Beddell. admilied that he had mado the "unco a bit hot," anil His Worship ordered him to pay .CI 15.?. per week funport of tho maintenance of his wile nnd children. . .
Charles Warren Hanning was made Ilia 6iibiect of separation, maintenance, and guardianship orders on the application of his wife, and was ordered to pay .£3 per week maintenance. Arthur Donaldson Piekaid was ordered to increase his ynympnU to hi? wife from 30s. Jo 355. per week forthwith, jlr. P. W. Jackson supported the application. and Mr. C. A. L. Trcadwell defended.
