GOING AHEAD
BUILDING BOOM AT MIEAMAR,
After having "hung fire" for a decade, there is every indication of a building boom at lliniiHin- next year. Rocently a lot of laud which has been tied up liv syndicates, who could not aaonl lo sell at what' buyers considered a ■ reasonable price (considering tho distance it was from town ami the coat of transit between the borough and tho city), have reduced • their prices, with tho result that n largo number of sections have been sold lo individual- humc-buildere, chiefly on those blocks northward of the avenue, and iUtuiiy be taken for granted that the new owners will build at the earliest opportunity. The Wellington Gas Company lias purchased a. block of land for ihsj purpose of erecting homes for its employees, which, it is understood, will be proceeded with as soon as the new brickworks at LVliraaiiir are able to turn out bricks in practicable quantities. The Government is also an active contributor to the building renaissance at Mirunmr. During bast week it let two big contracts for the erection of workers' homes on the lliramar flat, embodying in all 93 houses. Messrs. Swanson and Afhton have undertaken to erect 40, hn<l on JMday last Air. H. E. Manning uig-ned a contract with the Lahour Department to erect another 51 houses. These houses are to bo built in concrete, a condit.on boing that after a certain period tho contractors shall hand o\cr the houses at the rate of two a week.
.As this is tho first time on record in the Dominion that so many, concrete houses have been contracted l'or in one lot at thu same time, the progress of tho work—and the cost—will lie watched fiom all parts of th!s house-hungry country.
Sergeant N. A. Finch, V.C-, has been piescntvd with e silver gift caaket, weighing over 41b., and valued at 75 guineas, by the membere of the sergttinh;' mess at Eaetney Barracks, Portemouth.
