Whilst, said tho speaker, many of our leading politicians lind an open'mind on the question of State coal mines he was convinced that tho only way to settle the present difficulties was for the State to come in and tako control. Good living and housing accommodation for the miners would result, and the establishment of a sound superannuation scheme would eliminate to a great measure the present labour difficulties. People in this country were holding land valued by tho Government at from ,£ls to .£3O an acre, and selling the same at .£BO, ■890, and ,£l2O an aero. Tho speaker said the Government should send through tho country an army of valuers, and at once put the valuation of land on a .sound basis, and tax the holders accordingly. On the land question, Mr. S'.oane paid he took no exception to anyone holding a good slice of land providing the holder was producing tho maximum from the land, but land that was not doing so should and must bo subdivided.
