WELLINGTON SOUTH v. NGAIO. The return match between the Wellington South and Ngaio Clubs w<l3 played on Saturday evening, at St. Janice Sunday School, Newtown, which was kindly lent for the occasion by tho Rev. Mr. Shirer. After a most enjoyable contest the South Wellington Club were returned winners by nine games to five. Mr. James, who usually plays at board, 1 for Ngaio, was unable to attent, and this greatly handicapped his comrades, each of whom had lo move up a board. The came tit Kurd 1 v;as awarded to Mr. Purchas (W.S.), cs he had gained two pawns from Mr. Topp (N.), and tlio scoring of tiio game was only a mater of time. The fixture at board 2-A. W. Gyles (W.S.) v. G. S. Jones (N.)-was also stubbornly contested. \\ hen play ceased the latter J>ad rook and five pawns to his opponent's rook ami four pawns. As the match was not affected by this game, ilr. J 0110s considerately agreed to a draw thug relieving tho adjudicators of a rather ticklish job. It may bo -added that these players hod not met since their encounter at the Napier Congress on January 1, 1912, when Mr. Jones was successful, the gamo being "runner-up" for tho brilliancy prize of that year. At board 3 Air. Brooker (N.) utilised tlio Sicilian defence, but ho got n very tramped game. Mr. G. p. Anderson, playing strongly, had no difficulty in -cormg the game before the adjournment for icfreshments. TJie Newtownites won the uiatch played at Ngaio in June last by seven games to four, and they thus score "the double" this year, llie full score of Saturday's fixture, is as follows:Wellington South-Purchas, 1; A. THE WELLINGTON CLUB.
The tio between Messrs. It. ,T. Barnes (Class 1) and E. S. Taylor V Ck6s III) in tho Wellington Chess Club's rurrent handicap tonrnoy was played off on Tuesday evening, Mr. Taylor, who received the odds of pawn and two moves was successful, after a hard iignr. He thus holds the Pethorick Tropliv No. 2 lor the ensuing year. • 3i le .. winnere ot ' the various •'PeHiorick tourneys are as follow:—1903, C W lanner; 1901,1906, MOB, 1910, nnd 1912 R' J. Barnes; 1905, A. W. Gyles (who recently returned to New Zealand after lengthy war service); 1907, H. Jessop (now a prominent Wanganui player); 1909 W f- .Mason; 1911. A. Gyles (father of the 1900 winner); 1913, AY. Cowper Hill (who was lulled in Franco in September 1918):' 19U and 1910, W. C. White (I'etone) 1910 no contest; 1917 and J91I), E. S. Taylor; and 1918, A. W. O. Davies It will be seen that Mr. E. J. Bnrnes has won five of these tourneys and that Ins successes were all gained in the evennumbered years. "Luck in odd numbers has clearly not been his experience in this annual contest. By his success in 1908 Mr. Barnes won the "Petherick Irophy No. 1" (a handsome shield) outright. Tho "Petherick Trophy No. 2" cannot be won outright. The only condition imposed by the late Mr. "E. W Pethorick (for many years tho club's president, and a very liberal supporter' of tho game) was that the unnual conJest for his trophy should be a handicap tourney.
