WAIIiMAPA Tho Assessment Court lias upheld the valuation for taxing purposes of lnn<l in the Tiraumea Settlement owned 'by two soldiers. The monthly meeting of the Masterton Chamber of Commerco was held yesterday, Mr. Richard Brown presiding. Tho treasurer's report showed" a credit bal.ance of <£G Gs. The resolutions of the Grey town Chamber of Commerce: (1) "That tho Railway Department he aslced to speed up tho AVairarapa service by making a non-stop tuii between Wellington and Upper Hutt"; and (2) "That the Department be asked to remove tho extra .freight 011 imported timber and coal to country districts," were supported. It was resolved to write to tho Railway Department, asking for information regarding (lie reinstallation of the pre-war service. Messrs. G. B. Sykes and J. T. M. Hornsby, M.P.'s, notified their intention to support the Mangahao hydro-electric scheme. With a view of the institution of a lint rate for telephone subscriptions, Mr. D. M. Graham moved, and it was resolved, that the postmaster_ be consulted on the matter. Sir. Hill moved that representations be made for the removal of the restriction on the importation of gold. Mr. Graham seconded and tho motion was carried.'' On the motion of Mr. Graham it was resolved that the chamber support the Mayor in his efforts towards the widening of Perry Street. It wis decided to forward copies of the resolution to the property owners concerned. During tho month ended November 20 tlie Master.fon branch of the Repatriation Department granted seven business loans, aggregating .£l'Ms. four furniture loans totalling i£lßi lGs.. and two tools-of-trade loans amounting to .CIOO. Twentyfour trainees had their wages subsidised to the extent'of <£107 9s. 7d. The repayment of loan money was exceptionally good, i£GOS being received during the four weeks just ended. Applications for employment and employment offering were below normal, only seven men being placed in positions. . At the monthly meeting of the WairaTapa Caledonian Society held last night, the treasurer's report showed a credit balance of .fM 18s. 3d. Three new members were elected. • The offer of Ser-geant-Maior Malcolm to train two squads of children in physical drill was accepted with (hanks, it being arranged that the children should give a demonstration on New Year's Day.
