CITY'S "CINDERELLA"
1 TE ARO RATEPAYERS AGITATED ELECTORS' ASSOCIATION FORMED There was a fair attendance of electors at a meeting held at Dnstin's Tooms, Cuba Street, last evening to consider tho adrkibleness of forming an association of Tβ Aro residents, with a view to.watch-, ing and furthering the interests of this portion of the city. Mr. T. P. Hnlpin, Who was voted to the chair, said that it. was high thno that some cognisance was taken of the neglect by the City Council of the To Aro district. Jlr. Halpin referred in particular to the improvements desired in tho tramway service. In tins connection the immediate duplication of the tramway lino in Vivian Street was an essential step towards the bettering of tho Cuba Street service. The tram service should bo alternated between Cubit Street and Courtonay Place. At present by far the major portion of tho traffic to tho outlying districts was diverted by way of Courtonay. Plnce. Concluding, he ,moved that-a Tβ Aro municipal electors' association bo form- I ed. The motion was seconded by Mr. F. A. Vaughan, who dwelt at some length on the grievances of the Te Aro residents, all of which, he said, were fully justified. If they brought organised pressure to bear on the City Council, Cuba Street would no longer be treated as a by-lane in the matter of trams. When the association had secured the desired tramway improvements there would be no need for its activities to cease. There wero many other matters ..that required attention, including the betterment of tho streets and general appearance of the district. Both these matters required a great deal more attention than they had received at the Hands of the City Council, and without repeated agitation tho civic fathers would not do much. Jlr. D. E. Lawlor also spolce strongly in favour of the motion, and there was a unanimity of opinion that Te Aro had too long l>een treated as the "Cinderella of tho city. A point made by the -chairman ivav that that portion of the city lyine between Buclde and Vivian Streets offered ample scope- to any town-planning association, and should interest the proposed electors' association, After further discussion the n ,0 " 0 , ,, was carried unanimously, the name 'Te Aro Advancement Association" being decided upon. Officers were then elected as follow:— President, Mr. T. P. Hnlpin; vice-presi-dents. Messrs. T. Forsyth, F. A. Vaughan and T. 11. Donovan; committee, Messrs. J). K. Dustin, W. G. VnA, A. A. George, b. E. Lawlor. 13. P. Pearcc. S. H. Underwood, L. Evans. A. B Mann, and J. Leuchars. Mr. Lawlor undertook to carry out the seoTi'tj.rial duties until a was appointed.
