Gd. has been subscribed towards the Carterton Soldiers' Memorial JPund by the settlers of tho Waihiikeke district. In a draft containing suggestions for the apportionment of the cost of the improvement of the Rimutaka Hill Road, tho Fcatherston County Council placed tho quota of tho Masteiton Borough and County at 8 per cent. each. Tho FeatherBton County will pay 25 per 'cent, of the total cost, and the Government 50 per cent., tho balance to bo contributed by tho other local bodies of tho district. In order to eliminate tho bad bend known as "Dick's Corner" on the road near Greytown. Mr. Moikle has olfered tho Fcatherston County Council an adjacent strip of land. Tho Fcatherston County Council has' at present a debit balance of iI5Wil lGs. 3d. on its general account. It has been decided to borrow an additional .£2OOO to '*' complete the houso connections in tho drainage scheme o f liio county. A snecial meeting of. the Greytown ' Borough Council was held last week, when Mr. J. W. Blackman read his report on tho local gasworks.. Jt was resolved to close the local gasfittings showroom, and that tho sale of fittings bo left in the hands of tho Town Clerk and gas manager. Forty fanners attended a veterinary, demonstration given by Mr. Blake, Government veterinary surgeon, under tho . auspices of tho Wuirarapa Fanners' Union, at Mr. J. Dnyslrs milking shed, at Nircaha, on Friday. Sevoritl horses and cows suffering with various ailments were brought along by their owners, and Mr. Blako diagnosed and prescribed for each case. With regard to thq science congress which it is proposed to hold in Palmer* ston North in 1321, the president of tho local Philosophical Society has been notified that at a meeting of the standing committee of tho New Zealand Institute a sub-committee, consisting of Messrs. M. A. Eliott and L. Birks and Professor Easterfiold, was set up to mako tho pre- » liminary arrangements for tho holding of tho conference. Tho secretary of tho standing committee (Mr. B. C. Aston) has received a letter from tho Australasian Society for the Advancement of science, stating that'it was hoped there would be no clashing of dates between tho New Zealand Cungrwa and that to be held in Hobart on January 5, 1921. ■ Mr. Eliott informed tho meeting of tho . Philosophical Society that the dates not clash, and that arrangements jWcra well in hand for the congress. ' Mr. Kenneth .Eglinlon received rather serious injuries to his face and head from the glass windscreen, as a result of a motor-car colliding with a bridge on Miller's Road, Dannevirkc, when ho was en route to the Mangatoro' Estate. An unusual position has arisen over the recent poll taken by the Palmerston North-Kair.anga Kiver Board to raise a loan of ,£7OOO for tho purpose of Mana* watu lUver protection works.. It will be remembered that, the voting resulted 113 in favour of the proposal,- and 91 against, and when; under a misapprehen-. eion that only a baro majority was required, ..it was declared carried, On forwarding the declaration as to tho result to tlie Slato Advances Office, tho latter returned it, .saying that a. three-fifths majority, as outlined in section 11 of tho Local Bodies Loans Act, 1913, was re. quired to carry loans. As tho number of votes in favour of tho loan was less tiiiin three-fifths majority, the proposal had ttecn lost, and no further steps could bo taken- in tho direction of raising tho loan. On tho receipt of the letter tho board . sought legal opinion. After a general discussion at a special meeting of tho board it was decided to wait on the board's solicitor and ascertain the : position with regard to tho poll, and find out how soon tho matter can again bo submitted to tho ratepayers. Tho death is announced of Mr. Charles Peinberton, founder of Pcmborton (Feilding district), and brother-in-law to Mr. W. H. Field, M.P. Deceased, who died last Wednesday, was well known and liighk respected. Tho soldiers' monument at Mr.katuku is expected to bo erected this yeek. Mr. J. Holden, wiio had previously donated a new Post Office to tho people, has now bought for them tho Foresters' Hall at Mak'otuku. The Orient Lodge in Palmerston North extended a "welcome home" to Bro. Davis, who had recently returned from tho front with honours. A number of lodges from the surrounding district were present, and a most enjoyable time was spent*.
