MB. DTJNBAR SLOANE. Mr. Dunbnr Sloane, Liberal candidate for Wellington Suburbs, addressed a meeting at St. Hilda's Hall. Island Bay, last evening. Tho chair was occupied by Colonel Hushes, D.5.0., who said in introducing tlio speaker that tho last tinlo they met was when ho came off tho Gal'Hpsli beach to the hospital ship Malieno. Mr. Sloano advocated tho establishment of a Stato bank, stressing tho necessity of such an institution being under the direction of specially selected bankers. In order to advance nationally wo required local manufactures. . These would bo the greatest employers of labour, ami increase the opportunities of the wage-earners. Tho railway, road and bridge development on a progressive scale was. advocated. Hβ referred to tho folly of placing farmers on the land unless good communication to tho markets and contres of population were provided. Simultaneous development of the hydroelectric schemes of the Dominion were also advocated by the candidate. In this connection the securing of adequate electrical supplies by the Government was also urged. Tho candidate was convinced that the perfecting of these schemes would in a great measure solve tho domestic help problem for mothers and wives. Mr. Sloane. dealt with tha question of labour, and whilst lie recognised Iho many difficulties which existed to-day with regard to the conditions of ■workers ho strongly condemned anything in the nature of direct action, strike, or "go-slow." He was of opinion (hat the only way to settle tlicso difficulties was by constitutional means. Violent direct action tactics had been ,«]enlt with .in the past and would bo dealt with in the same way by the good citizens of this country. The cost of living was touched on, and the need for ur«ency of action by the Government through its Board of Trade was pointed ■( hearty vote of thanks and confidence «-as proposed by Mr. V. Brookes and seconded bv Mr. M'Lean. An amendment of thanks only proposed by a Labour Party representative was lost on a fihow of hands.
