POLICE SKIRMISHES AT ALEXANDRIA

Tho official prohibition of demonstrations, combined w'th a strong display by tho police, has had a quieting effect. At Alexandria a few hundred noisy demonstrators wero dispersed after skirmishes with tho police, and there were a fow ■■wrests, but thoro was nothing liko an organised inovoment. An appeal for volunteers to run railways resulted in hundreds offering daily. Tho threatened geimral strike apparently has been definitely postponed.—Rcuter.
