NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By Glencoe.)

The C..T.C. meeting will be advanced j another stage to-day. Satisfactory ac- { peptances have been received for most of i the events, and there is every prospect of a good day's racing. | Proceedings will open.with tbe Hurdles.! for which there are only three run-: ners. Achilledes is making bis first appearance over jumps at tho meeting, but ho hardly appears capable of defeating Parana, who is out to concede him 311b. Tho Spring Nursery Handicap, four furlongs, points to Listening Tost, who <wns unlucky on Monday, and only got beaten by a'head by a good one in Sunny Corner, 'for which 000 guineas was refused at tho bloodstock sale. Gasbag, who is making his first appearance at the meeting, and La Paix may be tho best, of the others. j Seasprito was unlucky enough to lose: portion of her gear on Monday, and she j should do a lot better in the Olaio Plate j to-dav. I The Cup winner, Vagabond, will meet i the three-year-olds in the Canterbury j Cup, but as Affectation does not appeal' \ to be a stayer, Vngabond wiil have plenty of supporters. He will be ridden by C. Tteid. A. Oliver, who was at Auckland on the opening day, will bo up on Battlo Song, but. on Cup form Vagabond should hold him safe. The Jockey Club's Handicap field is not a strong one, nnd surprise was expressed when Punka; who has been purchased by • Mr. W. H. Gnisford. was not paid up i for.' The favourite may be Melee, with 1 Hurry Fp second choice. There is a good field in the Oaks, but it is not a strong one. The favourite may be Warlove, who has come on a lot during the week. K«=e. Wreath will also have plenty of supporters. The biggest field of tlm day is engaged in the Itandolnh Handicap. They are not' a good lot, and the favourite may be Bonnotter, who was unlucky in the S[iriiur Plate, with plenty of support also for Mandrake. Kixieei! horses are engaged in -he Avon Welter Handicap. The race he had on Monday will do Macduff a lot of good, and the Cliokehore three-year-old may be equal lo accounting for the opposition. Sunny Corner, winner of the Trwelt Handicap at the lliecnrlon meeting, is by imported Sunny Lake from Angelina (Jjownshire— Angele). liosiini, who won Hie New Zealand

Derby at Eiecarton, is a full brother to Clierubini, who won tho classic in 191ji. Rossini gave Mr. G, D. Greenwood his fourth Derby win, and second in succession, his previous winners being .Danube, Clierubini, and Gloaming. Trenthani-trained animals have now won the Metropolitan Handicap two years in succession, Devotion winning last year and Battle Song this year. .At the yearling sales at Christchurch last year,' Mr. B. Drougli bought a full sister to Rossini for 135 guineas. At Warwick harm Races (N.S.AY.) on November 1, Broom, who was favourilo for the first event, while throe lengths in the lead and looking aW over a winner, turned round and ran in the opposite .direction. Mr. W. G. Stead recently informed "Goodwood," of the "Australasian," that no further effort would bo made to train Sasanof, and that tho well-performed Martian' gelding will in future bo used as a hack. It is slated an offer of .£2OOO was rceently received for Uncle Ned, but so far no dealt has eventuated. The offer came through a well-known Christchurch auctioneering firm. Artilleryman furnishes a good illustration of how a colt fairly moderate at two years old will develop brilliancy of a high order at a year older. The son if Comedy King contested nine races last season, and only succeeded in one of' his engagements. Mr. R. M. Carter, in whose colours British Arch is racing in Sydney, has purchased from Mr. A. N. Gibbons a three-year-old full-sister to that horse, ond the filly will be shipped to Australia at the first opportunity. It is understood that the price at which tho daughter of Marblo Arch changed hands was j 250 guineas. The gelding Elynn died 4 Thames on ] Wednesday last from some internal com- I plaint. Elyan won a couple of races I ond showed considerable promise. He was just tho stamp for a hurdler, and ono or two good judges were after him for that purpose, but his owner refused to part with him. At the last Olvinemuri J.C. Meeting he returned « dividend of over half a century when he won the Maiden Handicap. Prom Opotiki comes news of the death of Conqueror, the veteran son of Medallion and' Siesta. Mr. 11. D, Irwin,'tho owner of Connueror, writes to "Phaeton," of tho "New Zealand Herald" as fovlows: —"Conqueror, the. hero of six good races, and 27 show ring honours, died on October 31. Apparently the old horse died without n struggle,' as the grass had noteven a scratch on it. On ninkine a postmortem examination, I found all his organs in good health, and it would seem that his heart simply ceased totait. On putting the heart on the scales it weighed 01b. 40z., which, I. should think, was rather large. The cfd horse appeared to bo in the best of health on the day previous to li;b death. Perhaps Conqueror's greatest victory was his beating several'good horses at tho Gisborne show at the age of 23." The following nominations have been received for the Alison Cup, one mile 2A furlongs (to 1m run at tho Talcapuna Spring M'jting):—AYniuta. AA'indorali, Royal Irish, Mullingar, Hyllus, Gold Kip, Uncle Ned, Paddington Green, Housewife, RatbJHn, All Talk, MeltchikoP.', ArcTiie. Tabasco, Depredation. Kerv Gross, who won tho Auckland Cup two years ago, and has since had a good spell, was being used at Eiccarton on Saturday as a hack by the assistantStarter. He looks a trille light, and is to «o into work immediately. \A r hen racing with the leaders in the New Zealand Cap on Saturday, and apnarcntlv going as well as the rest, Nobleman burst a blood-vessel.
