NOTES FROM VARIOUS CENTRES (From Our Soecial Correspondents.* WAIRARAPA The Carterton Borough Council is asking Mr. Toogood, consulting engineer, to report on tho condition of the watermains, which aro quite inadequate to provide a sufficient pressure for lire-fight-ing purposes, At the monthly meeting of the Central I Committee of tho Wairarapa Hospital I and Charitable Aid Board it was reported that tho receipts for October included a sum of ,£77t lGs. Sd. as levies from local bodies, and £iohl 18s. Gd. as Government subsidy on the previous quarter's contributions, The matron's reports for the various hospitals in the district were as follow: Masterton—Admissions during October, 49; discharges, -12; deaths, 3; remaining, -17; Greytown, 18, 17, nil, 16; Pahiatua, 12, 1, 9. Patients' fees received wore:—Masterton, £% lis. 6d.; Clreytown, .C7O is.; Pahiatua, £$> las. 2d.; Government fees, in respect To tho inmates of thy Buchanan and Solway Homos, £66 lis. Bd. Nino families aro at present in receipt of charitable aid, totalling £$ Is. Gd. per week. It is proposed to erect a settlers' club at the rear of the Memorial plot on the main street of Carterton, and to convert tho grounds themselves into an attractive pleasure park, containing side-walks, garden plots, etc. Two buildings at present on the sito are shortly to be removed. The Masterton County ranger has been instructed to report on .ill cases of 6tock being herded or grazed on tho roadside, when proceedings will bo taken against the owners. The Carterton Council has remitted its share of tho cost of the AVaingawa Bridge to the Masterton County Council. The second instalment of the ,£4OOO loan for tho bridge has been advanced by the Public Trustee. Tho petition in reference to tho Wairarapa hydro-electric scheme has already been signed by 55 per cent, of the ratepayers of tho river area of the Featherslon, County. According to Mr. J. C. Cooper the rcquisito number of signatures lias now been obtained in all the boroughs and counties with the exception of tho Masterton County, and it is expected that tho delay in this section will be overcome very shortly, Tho Finance Committee of the Masterton County Council has recommended the payment of £b to Mr. Norman M'LachJan for his services in protecting the bridges on the Kiriwhakapilpa Eoad during tho recent bush fires. The anniversary of the signing of the armistice was celebrated in Masterton yesterday by tho tolling of tho church bells and fire-boll at intervals of five seconds during tho two minutes immediately following 11 a.m. All activity ceased during tho period, and peoplo in the streets stood with bared heads. ■
