MANAWATU SHOW
PEOPLE'S DAY FINE DISPLAY OF LIVE : ; v: STOCK By Telegraph—Special Eeporter. Palmerston North, Novciubor G. Four swisons wore experienced on tlio 'tlion*'grounds at Palmerston North today, on tho occasion of the second day of the Manawatu and AVes.t Coast A. and P. Spring Show. In tlio afternoon, however, the weather became sottled, and there was brilliant sunshine. Tho attendance throughout tho day was very largo, and in the afternoon the grandstand iras well filled, and there was a big crowd round tho ring, whero tlio Competitions wero in progress. In general tliess were not tin to expectations. The exhibition in qualified hunters was decidedly poor in the men's class, but this was more than in the event set apart for ladies,' t!>c fair eonestriennes in many riding the same horses as the male competitors, and gave tliem points and n boating. It is quite pafo to say that in no show ring in tho Dominion has a Ix>ttor exhibition been Riven by lnd.v riders. In this competition J. J. Bryeo's Twilight, ably pv.oted bv Miss C. Bryee. was first, H. Hassall's Micky Free, ridden by Miss (!. Groom, second, and Airs. G. Bekkcr's Gale, with tho owner in the saddle, third. The prizes for tho best lady riders wnro awarded as follow: —Airs. Groom, 1; Miss G. Maher. 2; Afe. C. Bryee, 3. The Dominion newspaper's prize for t.ho horse most suitable for troop work was awarded to Air. W. Howard Booth's Lonely, the winner of many troop competitions, including the championship »t Christchurch last year, with Miss G. Malier's Romeo second, and AV. D, Watson's Bill Massoy third.
As regards the horeos, the draughts, although not numerically strong, shoived considerable improvement as t:o quality on hist year's entry, the breeding classes being particularly good, the young stock giving fair promise. The light harness liorso qlassas were well fiiled, and evoked keen competition. The cobs ana ponies, though somewhat mixed as to stamp, included somo really useful sorts, and nearly all the prize-winners were of good qunlity, stvligh sorts and well mannered. The podis'ree cattl" of all Wed 3 were well represented. The nedigriv Shorthorns were all true to tvne, and came forward in excellent condition, and the younger classes esnecially pave good promise of perpetuating the lireed. He'efords were a fashionably-bred lofi, arid Mr.. E. Short's well-known l'arorangi liprd met with very little opposition. Ayrshire,s .were all good, especially _ the cows in milk, which were an exceedingly strong class.-- The first r,nd second prize cows, although full of quality, were a little on the smnll side, but could nob be denied their positions. Jerseys were a 'strong class, nnd brought'out keen competition. There was a good entry _of rriesians, which are evidently coming into popularity in tilie Manawatu. and all tho'.classes were closely contested. There 'was a big entry of milking Shorthorns, but: the late, unfavourable season told fiommvhat on their condition, and many otherwise eood slock suffered on tliat account; The fat cattle, though not numerous'were of really good quality, and better .thair.was expected. . . Principal interest in the filieen sectn'onS centred in the new classes of EomnT Marsh shown in. natural condition. The judge expre'ssed himself very pleased with 'these_clas=e.s. He described them as of very- ciualily all through, and in the breeders'' classes the only , weak one ■n-as. that devoted to aged rams. To-morrow. (Friday) is set asidj as 'People's' Day, and the ring competitions Vill be the order of tile day.
