MORE ABOUT HIDES
Once more in the House yesterday Mr. Jlassev was asked to do something to improve the position with regard to tho market for hides in this country. There is a controlled price for hides for local "sale, and after Hie needs of tho local market are supplied' the balance of tho hides may bo exported. The result of the scheme in operation is that Hie New Zealand tanners are taking the best of the hides at a low price, and that tho rest are being exported' at a very much hishcr rrice. It is said that some of the people producing hides are adopting tho obiectionable practice of slitting hides, in order to spoil their sale on the New Zealand market, in order that they may ho allowed to export tho oaniaged hides for a better price than is procurable .-here. A oucstinn on 'bis subject waa ;"put. to the Prime Minister by Mr. S. G. Smith', who urged that the present arrangement was not assisting anybody.
Mr. Massey said that as soon as he had timo to do so he intended to investigato the position. He would adopt a sugges. tion that he should get tho High Commissioner to cable reports weekly as to tho nrice of hides in Britain and America.
