■ The' annual sheep returns wore laid UDon tho table of tlie"ulou3c of Representatives yesterday. Thoy show that tho number of sheep in New Zealand on April 30 was 25,828,551, a decreaso of 709.748 on the preceding year. The total for tho North Island was 14,211,011, and for the South Island 11,(510,(510. The number of sheepowners was 24,065. Tho counties containing tho largest number of sheep were:—Southland, 1,225,300; Hawke's Bay. 1,105.253; Ashlrarton, 1,021,318: Cook. 1,012,594. The sheep wcro distributed over districts as follow:— Auckland 1,800,098 Nanier-Gisborne 0,485,280 Wellington-West Coast 5,805,000 Mariborough-Nelson-Westland... 1,385,870 Cantcrbury-Kaikoura 5,437,5101 Otago 4,792.779
