SOCIETY OF MUSICIANS

After being more or less moribmd during the war period, Hie Wellington Society of Musicians has been resuscitated, and there are now prospects of its being able to do good work in ihe cause of' music in the Umpire City. Tho society met nt the residence of Mr. H. Tombs, in Burnell Avenue, on Saturday evening, and discussed the affairs of the society. During the evening a delectable programme of music was submitted. Mr. 11. Tombs, with Miss Valerie Corliss M the piano, played Grieg's Violin Sonata in C Minor very tastefully; Miss Corliss played Schumann'? "Romance" and MaoDowell's "Polowaise"; Dr. Creser (examiner for Trinitv College, London) and Mr. H. Tombs played ElwrY "Sonata in B Minor," and ?' 'Sinn (recently from Sydney) Fane 'h great taste "Softly Awakes My .. -n't" (from Saint Saens's "Samson and Delilah") and Godard's "Angels Guard Thee." During the evening Dr. Creser spoke interestingly on "The Development of Technique" (as anplied to the pianoforte), and incidentally put in a very stroii? claim for the study of English music in nreference to Continental, stating that tliero was n ■rood deal of music bein<» composed by Englishmen equal in every way to the much-played music of Continental composers, who'? names 6tood high in the musical world.
