ANNUAL MEETING.
The annual meeting .ot the Wellington Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held yesterday,. Jleadowcroft said the society had made lio prominent appeal for funds to carry on whilst there was such a direct and pressins" need for war funds., but contented itself with quictlv soliciting sympathetic help and financial assistance from those who were the lovers of animals, Ihe work done by animals in the war must surely, appeal.to all. Mr. jueadowcroft said that the literature of the ISth liud 19th centuries, abounding, in sympathetic delineations of the animal world, reflected and probably promoted the change 111 the treatment Pf animals. The S.I'.C.A. was founded in 1822. and it must ahyavs be borne in mind that the object of the society was not to obtain convictions, but io render them .unnecessary.. For every case brought into the L».\v Courts there were mnnv where desired. reformation had been effected by gentler means. Most important of all was the work of the society in the' education of public opinion, 'through its publications, through the Press generally, and also through the schools in the district..Perlinns the proudest, achievement of the S P.C'.A. lay in the share it took in promotii'R legislation."
