Soi oioty opens to-morrow on th'e showgrounds, Carterton, and given favourable U weather, the attendance is expected, to beun keeping with tho entries—a record. This, is the first show tho society has held since the termination of the war, and although many breeders of stock i lave experienced difficulty as regards la- ; tour,'competition in many of the classes, i will bo keen. ■ ■ : '■ The advent of motor-cars as a means i pf : transit aijd the use of petrol-driven ; machinery on the farm has. in many instances replaced tho horse, but in face of this the entries in horses comprise 94, fteing; an increase over last year, but not ' ..quite up to 1917. There is no competiI tion in the'thoroughbred classes, but in ; the .hack and harness classes the competition is keen, and in addition to'competitors from all parte of tho Wairarapa ■■■■ entries have, come from Hastings, and / almost every class is well represented*. :'• The draught horses, and also harness horses,'while not so numerous in num- ' bera as the hack and harness class, are , fairly well -filled. • The" cattle-entries this year are much stronger in number than on previous oc- : '. casions, and in the purebred Shorthorns the competition is good, nnd the compe- !,-■ titers include Sir Walter Buchanan (Tu- :; purupuru), W. Gray (Feilding), W. How-' .."■ ard Booth (Carterton), G. A. Turner (El- : tham)," E. D. M'Lean (Hawke's Bay), R. Buick (Masterton), F. E. Perry (Martin- ; borough), Arch. M'Lean (Hawke's Bay). '• Grado Shorthorns are not represented, whilo Messrs. D. M'Kohzie and J. C. . M'Killop (Masterton) are -the only exhibitors 1 of J Herefords. Messrs. E, Cresswell- and--Burling Bros., of Masterton, . are'.the.only competitors in Aberdeen ■ Angus, and have quite a number of ex- -' liibits in'several' classes.
