MERTON'S V. MR. HUGHES
THE POSTPONED LIBEL ACTION. London, October 2-1. When the libel action, Merton versus Hughes, was mentioned in the Chief .Ins. tice's Conn, Mr. Stuart Bcvan, on behalf of Mr. William Hushes, applied for a postponement. He said that since July S the defendants had been sifting a thousand documents, of which many were in German and French. Their accountants were now examining their books, and this would take a few more months. The defence rested largely on documents '" the plaintiff's possession. The defence wanted Mr. Hughes in London for the trial. Mr. Hogg, on behalf of Mcrlan's, agreed to a reasonable postponement. Ho said he desired to sec Mir. Hughes in Hie witness box. The Chief Justice ordered the case to he mentioned in January. Ho said Mr. Hughes was at the present moment engaged upon most important public affairs, and the Court must eonb'idei his convenience regarding his return to London—ft.u.s>X./,. Cable Asm.
