Tho men's golf championship, played on tho local links, was. won .by E. Enight, who defeated G. Pritchnrd i up and 3 to play. Tho entry fees will bo devoted to the fund being raised by tho Mayor of Compeigne, Paris, for tho devastated war area. Tho local lawn tennis club opened its season on Saturday 'with scratch games. Tho club has now six grass courts, and. the greens aro in excellent order. A deputation waited on tho Borough' Council on Friday night to urge the necessity of purchasing a section of two acres of ground for recreation purposes. It was pointed out that such an area was necessary, close to tho centre of the town, as the main recreation grounds were some distance outside the ljoundaries. A committee was set up to go into tho matter with Manawatu. There aro indications of a coming boom in young dairy cattle] . Buyers from tho far north, who have been scouring the Hawke's Bay district where they are purchasing dairy heifers, nioro specially young Jerseys, are now turning their attention to tho Manawatu, where they aro apparently looking out for young Holsteins as well as Jerseys. However, with tho scarcity of feed during tho winter tho stock hero aTe not in the best of condition, and as many owners of tho best young Stock intend keeping tho best of them for building up their herds. . If they secure any hers thoy will have to pay fancy prices for them with the rush for beef. During the last year or two most of the dairymen have killed their heifer calves m order to make loom for the steers which wero ultimately turned into beef at remunerative prices. Naturally this had the effect of causing a scarcity in dairy heifers which tho herds have yet scarcely recovered from, .but during the present season at all events heifer calves are considered worth preserving. ' Both the trade 'and tho prohibitionists aro making every endeavour to see that all who aro entitled are placed on tho roll in view of tho coming poll. Tho methiirl adopted for enrolment by the Postal Department does not appear to bo satisfactory, one canvasser having .enrolled 168 names of those who had not been enrolled in fivo days. ■
