WELLINGTON SOCIETY'S ANNUAL REPORT. The twenty-sixth annunl report of tho Wellington Suciety for the Prevention of 'Cruelty to Animals states that tho committee feels that the corporate purpose, of (he organisation lias been strictly and fairly carried out. -The cases of ill-treat-ment, etc., dealt with by the inspector number 231. This does not in•elude a number of minor cases, which were dealt with by warnings and advice to owners and others concerned. There were nine prosecutions for the past year, all of which were cases of gross cruelty, and which were punished by fines, etc., varying fr.om .£1 7s, to .€l7 9s. Tho City Council have renewed the water trough at Lambton Station, close to the Government Printing Office, and have promised to erect new ones at Davis Street and on (lie Hutt Road The comniitteo has noticed with grec.t pleasure that tho present 'Parliament has passed an amendment to the Police Offeuces. Act relating lo cruelty to animals. Deep regret at the loss by death of one of tho oldest and most valued members, Sir. J. Holt, is recorded. The comniitteo is indebted to Sir. A. Forrest for his valued assistance in collecting ,lho sum of £i 0 for tho funds of the society, also to the trustees of the T. G. Macarthy Trust for the sum of JHO voted by them to the funds. While thanking thoso who have responded to appeals, the committeo feel that still greater help is needed in order to make further advances in tho humane work. To achieve this desirably object a larger membership, involving a wider extent of personal sacrifice, will bo required. "Tho cordial sympathy and the active assistance of the Commissioner of Polico and his eul>ordinates of all ranks are again most gratefully acknowledged. Any help, constantly called for, is always cheerfully rendcrod, and this evinces not only attention to duly, but an nhhoiTciUM! of cruelty which is to lie highly commended." Thanks are expressed to those members of the public who linvo brought cases of ill-treatment of animals to the notice of the inspector, to the Railway Department, tho Karori, Miramar, and Eastlwurne Borough Councils, for free passes, honorary solicitors, auditor, and (he Press; also nil subscribers and others who have assisted tho society in its undertaking.
