THE TURF

TRENTHAM RACES

WELLESLEY STAKES WON BY

MOORFOWL

HANDICAP BY KILRUSH

There was a record attendance present for the opening day of the spring meeting of the Wellington Racing Club. The special/ train service was much appreciated, and thousands made the trip by rail, while tho motor traffic was also exceptionally heavy. The stand accommodation was all too small for the largo crowd, which included His Excellency tho Governor, the Prime Minister, several members of the Cabinet, the Leader of the Opposition, and a host of privato members besides visiting owners and sportsmen from all parts of tho Dominion. The racing was good, and the finishes excellent in the majority of eases. Onlv two favourites were successful during the afttrnoon. The Wellesley Stakes went to the highly-bred Chokcbore candidate Moorfowl, who in well-informed circles is credited with being as good a filly as has vet been bred at Stonvhurst. She is a well-grown, neatly shaped youngster, with the heart of her sire Autumnus and tho pace of her dam Kiriemuir. Kilnish. the favourite for the big handicap, scored cleverly after being splendidly handled by J. Olsen, who had him well nlaced the whole way, and when the tiring Motuihi hung out in tho straight, tho winner slipped up on the rails. The Intalisator staff handled the sum of Ji51,153 lfls., as against «£35,1C0 for the same (lav last vcar. Rov'r.l Exchange ptavted at a very short price in the Seatoun Handicap, but a bad run spoilt any chance she had, while Warlike and Esperance also suffered on the journey. At the start Esperance was first out, but she soon gave wav to Prince Hal and Idle Talk, with Philomela and Arch Lassie 'leading the favourite and a bunched field. Turning into the straight Idle Talk fell back, and Arch Lassie took second place, whilo Rnval Exchange and Prinlemps became prominent. Tho .leader held his own, and won bv a length from Arch Lassie, who was ridden right out to beat. Printemps. Matty and Royal Exchange wero close up. Caricature was favourite in a good betting race for the Taita Handicap. Tho favourite went down short in her preliminary. She did not, begin well, but soon got to the front, and with Lucullan led all tho way. The last-named, got his head in front in the last .Jew strides. Blackmail was a poor third, and Pure Laziness next Cycle broke down. .

Hurry Up started at the shortest price in the Wainui Handicap, whilo those two good performers Vagabond and Mascot wero neglected on. the machine. Vagabond was ihc first to move, but he was steadied, and Dribble led BurranKonc'down the back. Hurry Up was urominent at the half-mile, where. Vagabond improved his position. Dribble was clear of Burrangong at tho'straight entrance, where Vagabond came on the scene. He disposed of Burrangong, but could not reach Dribble, who won by half a length. '■ Burrangong was two lengths away, and then came Bingham. Bonnie Heather was nt odds on in the lvimutaka Handicap, thero being moro monev on him than any other liorso during the day. Moutoa Ivanova was the next choice of the public. Consultation set a fast paco down the back, where the. favourite was in the rear. At the half-mile Moutoa Ivanova moved up, but Consultation was still in charge at the thrco furlongs. Then Moutoa Ivanova moved up, and was first into the straight. Here Falstaff got through on tlw fence, but had to bo pulled out to pass the leader. Bonnie Heather then put in a challenge, and though the leader was shaken up he had a neck's advantage at the post. Moutoa Ivanova was two lengths away. Bonnie' Heather was very unlucky, and had to cover a lot of extra ground', but there was also a lot of merit in the performance of ihc winner, of whom more will bo hoard.

Bed Eibbon and Maioha were the only withdrawals -from tho big handicap. Kilrush was tho favourite, and in a fastrun race ho won very decisively, after being aided-by a lucky run on the fence when coming into tho straight. At. the start Motuihi led the field at a clapping pace, with Helium, Kilrush, and Battle Song handy. Down the back Lucid and Eose Pink had a had run, and lost their positions, while Old Gold moved up behind the lenders. Entering the straight Motuihi still led, but shortly afterwards Hetaua displaced him, and Battle Song showed up on the outside. When fairly in a lino for homo Motuihi hung out, and Kilrush slipped up on the rails, and soon beat Hetaua, winning by two lengths. Bagdad was the same distance awav third, and then came Pacific Slope, Old Gold, and Motuihi. The showing of l.he winner was very good, and enhanced his New Zealand Cup prospects. A. good-looking lot of'youngsters contested the Welles-ley. Stakes. Saima was the favourite, but' several of the others were well backed. There was. a long delay at the barrier, Bestir and La Pais being tho prime offenders. Tho start seemed to bo a. good one. Cantnbile led Weary Willio and Moorfowl for the first two furlongs, when Weary Willio took charge, but over the last furlone Mooi'fowl finished very fast, and as straight as a gun-barrel. She won by a bare length from Weary AVillie, with Kieht and Left finishing, fast in third place, and then came Saima. The winner has a big reputation in the south, and she looks like acting up to it. There was a good field in the October Handicap, Sweet Memory being favour-" ile. with Parorangi second choice. An outsider in Admyra took charge soon after the barrier rose, and led all the way. Pose Wreath shot out half-way down tin straight, but coulci not reach the leader, who won easily. lvilgour was close up, and then came Probate. • There were three good' favourites in the concluding event, and, remarkable to relate, they filled the places in tho order indicated on the machine, after a sensational finish. Murihiku led into the straight, where the favourite got through on the inside, but was immediately challenged by 80-Peep on the outside, while Maioha tried for an opening on tho fence, but was checked. , The other jwir were fi'-'hting out the finish when Maioha suddenly appeared, and the tria crossed the line together. The judge awarded the race to Tieritiyn (in the centre) by n head, with Maioha on tho rails second, and 80-Peep third. Bonny Briar was fourth, and then came Ermiiifi and Murihiku.
